Outfit all you cars with a "Get Home Bag" for under $30
PACK
I have had a "Get Home Bag" (GHB) in my car for over 4 years now. I have really put a lot of thought into it and wanted to let all of you know of a great deal out there on a great pack and stove. You can outfit your car with an excellent pack for under $10. This is the pack that I use, and I can honestly say that is is 100% reliable. This is a deal for three, so you can outfit your wife's car and a teenager's. I think it is good for similar packs to be used by everyone for uniformity. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=333345 These packs are incredibly well built and simple in their design. I have several that are made out of Cordura, but this Nylon is just as tough. Here are the packs features: 1. Rugged pack design 2. Inexpensive 3. Small enough to fit in a car trunk or back seat without taking up a lot of room. 4. Indestructable external frame. 5. METAL buckles for straps 6. Straps that allow you to attach a sleeping bag or tent on the the top or bottom for external storage. 7. Two loops on the back to store a folding shovel or trek poles. 8. 100% compatable with ALICE straps or IMPROVED ALICE STRAPS. 9. 100% compatable with ALICE kidney pad/belt or IMPROVED kidney pad/belt. The only faults with the pack: 1. Straps are servicable, but not comfortable (can be changed - see above) 2. Only 1700 cubic inches I personally, do not want a large pack with me. I want it small to carry only the essentials and not get in the way of my day to day storage in my car. If a pack is too big, you probably will not keep it in your trunk/back seat for long. My GHB is under 30 lbs. I do not feel that I am lacking anything essential. It is not really military looking, and makes an excellent day pack. It has a classic design to it that does not draw negative attention to it. Put a pack raincover over it and you can blend in anywhere. Here are some straps/pads that are compatible: 1. http://www.imsplus.com/ims2.html Under $9 2. http://www.tacticaltailor.com/index....PROD&ProdID=22 3. http://www.calarmy.com/backpacks/alice/ I have the pack in the back of my stationwagon covered in a black trashbag. It looks like I am returning bottles or something - perfect urban cammo. STOVES These stoves are perfect for a "Get-home-bag / Bug out bag / camping": http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=333499 Features: 1. No moving parts to break 2. Silent 3. Built in windscreen 4. Compatible with Sterno and fuel tabs 5. Cooking pot can be hung over a fire pit 6. Fuel is available cheaply at hardware stores (denatured alcohol)and gas stations (Fuel line fluid HEET) 7. Denatured alcohol is stable and not explosive like gas I keep one in my GHB and use it a lot while camping. I keep extra fuel in a soda bottle. I have never had the stove fail on me. I hope this information and review is helpful to all of you. Please feel free to ask me any questions. |

I opted for the "Home is GONE, get your arse to the woods!" bag. :proud:
Of course it was a lot more expensive. |
Re: Outfit all you cars with a "Get Home Bag" for under $30
I opted for the Big Bob and the Little Bob. Little Bob is a large, comfortable day pack. It's the get home from work or somewhere in a 10 mile or so radius of home bug-out bag. Big Bob is the "gonna be living out of a backpack for a long time" bag. It's a full-sized backpack. I also have a folding bike I sometimes carry in the back of my truck. Because I camp a lot, my truck is pretty well stocked with gear that just sort of lives back there anyway (I even have a down mattress back there! Lol!).

I don't know if this is what you guys are into, but I think this is a good
bag for the money. We recommend our employees carry this bag in case of a disaster, etc. for a short term 'event' like a 72 hour issue where people are stuck at work or otherwise. Additional items would be spare contact lenses, glasses, medicine, etc. from a personal needs standpoint. Other than that, this is a good little mini crisis bag. If the S really has hit the F, it isn't gonna do ya, but it's a nice bag. https://www.redcrossstore.org/Shoppe...8&LocationId=0 |
Re: Outfit all you cars with a "Get Home Bag" for under $30
This is my favorite little stove because I can use twigs, pinecones, etc, and do not need to carry fuel.
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=288270 Sure, I could set a can of sterno in there if I needed to, but I like having the option of using whatever is around. It makes a small package too. Though, in fairness, I still have to pack bulkier cooking gear that nests in that Swedish kit. That 3 pack of packs is quite a bargain! We use wheeled packs with backpack straps that cost a bunch more, but we like all their pockets and that we can roll them when terrain permits. |

In the costs more department, I have been considering one of these. Probably for the few ounces saved only a Himalayan expedition really benefits though.

In a "Get Home Bag" a stove makes little sense to me. You can have tea when you get home. I would rather use the space for more water.

Re: Outfit all you cars with a "Get Home Bag" for under $30
I work 22 miles from home, 18 of which are very rural.
A "get home" bag is a very critical item for me. I have two different bags, one for cold weather and one for warmer weather and just rotate them depending on the season. I would say my cold weather bag is at least 25#'s full and my warm weather bag is about half of that weight. I try to stay away from military looking stuff because if I need to hitchike, people may be leary of picking up someone that looks like Rambo. God's Peace TLM |

All you really need is a good lighter or some matches and a semi auto duty pistol. Thats my bugout kit. Anything else can be aquired accordingly.

We keep a 'local' get home bag in our car and truck.....if we're going more than local, the packing gets a LOT more extensive.
30 bucks wouldn't buy the ammo I carry on a trip :D The "leave me the heck alone, I'm going to the house" part of my long trip get home bag: http://www.digistash.com/data/026a39...9_p115620.jpeg |

I guess you plan on being surrounded by police while walking around with that thing? Walking around like that makes you a bullet magnet, IMHO. |

Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.
To each their own......IMHO. |

Re: Outfit all you cars with a "Get Home Bag" for under $30
Here is another useful thing for your car, but it's pricey. I was quoted $400 + shipping to equip my Toyota Corolla with it
http://www.shattergard.com/vehiclegard.html Basically it bulletproofs your windows, video demonstration is pretty convincing |
Re: Outfit all you cars with a "Get Home Bag" for under $30
I didn't see any bullets fired in the demo....just a guy with a baseball bat, and a cartoon of a brick on the home page.
But even assuming it IS bullet proof, you better plan on armoring the doors, etc below.....because the only thing between you and the outside is a thin layer of sheet metal on the outside and a plastic door panel on the inside.....a full metal jacket rifle bullet will go in one door and out the door on the other side unless something in between slows it up. |

I will take a look at that thanks Demos |

Sorry, it's not bulletproof, I was wrong. It's another product of theirs that is bulletproff
